A series of novellas for the most part, the stories follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall – a humble hedge knight, who with his squire Egg, secretly being Aegon Targaryen, will be king of Westeros. This unlikely duo travels across Westeros, coming into contact with figures and events that foreshadow conflict in the main series. In the adventures of Dunk and Egg, Martin finds a way to peel back layers concerning the history, politics, and culture of Westeros, all in a much more personal and occasionally lighter format. These tales laid a rich background to the Targaryen legacy and lore of Westeros.
