Blackfyre is a legendary Valyrian steel sword, known to be wielded by Aegon the Conqueror and passed on down through House Targaryen. It’s an expression of royal power, thus highly symbolic of legitimacy. History makes it even more precious since it was King Aegon IV who conferred it upon his bastard son Daemon Blackfyre, making him legitimate and inevitably sparking off the Blackfyre Rebellions. Daemon’s claim to the Iron Throne was driven by possession of Blackfyre, which stood as an unreserved negation to the Targaryen lineage. Through the passage of many years, Blackfyre went on to become a symbol of revolt for the descendants of Daemon, who invaded the Targaryens time and again by using the sword as an indication of having a vested right over the throne.
