Olipop stands out in this trend. Soda companies have reinvented the classic carbonated drink. Unlike typical sodas, Olipop’s drinks are refreshing and flavorful. These products (lollipops) are crafted to boost digestive health. Is it a secret? With low sugar and healthy ingredients, they have become popular. People now seek treats that align with modern health trends without feeling guilty. Olipop’s appeal starts with its ingredients. Instead, they use plant-based sweeteners like stevia and monk fruitThis preserves their flavors while reducing their sugar content. Thus, Olipop is ideal for those wanting sweet, fizzy drinks without high sugar risks. These risks include weight gain, insulin spikes, and a higher chance of Diab
Flavors
Watermelon Lime
Watermelon and lime embody the essence of summer. Olipop’s Watermelon Lime drink, in pale green and pink, reflects this vibe. Yet, the taste falls short. The drink is a lively pink with bright carbonation. At first, the scent is like juicy watermelon. It evokes fruit, not candy. But, after a minute, a musty smell, like old onions or garlic, emerges. The flavor resembled fresh ingredients rather than old onions. The watermelon flavor was sweet and fruity. This was surprising, given Olipop’s success with other citrus drinks. It highlighted the drink’s lack of balance. Watermelon lime ended up last in the ranking. It fell short in taste and aroma, leaving us thirstier.
Classic Root Beer
At Tasting Table, we know the best root beer brands. We were eager to see if Olipop’s version would add a unique twist. We also wondered if its root-rich Olismart could balance the often overly sweet soda. This gives Olipop a chance to attract devoted fans.
But in half a second or so, the band boots out that root beer taste, leaving only the all-too-thin taste of its base. As long as you swish it around your mouth, it might feel like true love. But once you stop, the illusion fades. You realize this drink, sparkling and tonic, is not soda. It’s a pretender. It’s dressed up too fancy.
Crisp Apple
Crisp Apple has an unexpected taste and aroma reminiscent of bubble gum. It doesn’t have tutti-frutti ingredients like strawberries or bananas.
The Crisp Apple flavor has a milder Olismart taste than the top flavors. Of those, it both enhances and detracts. Here, the apple flavor dominates, overshadowing Olismart. This is unusual, as lower flavors are typically just weak. Describing the Olismart taste is challenging. It’s plant-like but not unpleasant. Sometimes, it boosts the top flavors. Does fiber have a taste? We’re uncertain.
Let’s call it a botanical mystery. Like root beer, Vintage Cola has an impossible task. It must compete with a soda flavor perfected over a century. But after that first impact, it returns to its original state in a short time, and that state is not bad. It has a pleasant quality,” recalls Cherry Coke. This is odd since Olipop also makes a targeted Cherry Cola. Often, though, it tastes like a watered-down Dr Pepper.
Doctor Goodwin
That’s not true, Dr. Pepper. But it better impersonates a doctor than Vintage Cola did at impersonating. The front end is nice. It has the right fruity, nutty, and cola notes. But the back end is mopping the floor with that Olismart taste. It reacts so much to all that Doctor Goodwin has left behind. The profile’s complexities create its downfall. Dr. Goodwin might be like Dr. Jekyll. Sorry Doc, but you’re another entry in this ranking. It’s best enjoyed in large gulps. The aftertaste from your meal can ruin your earlier efforts. But you can find a better option in the Olipop lineup, which includes cola and similar drinks.
Banana Cream
Banana Cream deserves credit for tackling a unique challenge. It offers banana soda, a rare find. The flavor, yet, lacks widespread popularity. Yet, we can appreciate its uniqueness. The creators aimed for a specific audience, but anyone can enjoy it. We knew what to expect when we opened the bottle, and it was delivered. The taste? It’s like banana candy, combined with Olipop’s sweet, vegetal notes. Then, it finishes with a metallic hint. This was better than we anticipated. If you sought something unusual, you’d hope for a perfect finish. We like it, but we’re not obsessed. Still, we’d finish a six-pack. It’s a solid drink, striking a balance between no regrets and the urge to experiment.
Formation of Olipop soda
Their drinks are low in sugar. They have plant-based ingredients, such as botanicals and prebiotics.
Ingredients:
Water: 1 liter (carbonated if you have a soda maker; otherwise, still water will do, and we’ll carbonate it later).
Prebiotic Fiber:
Two tablespoons of inulin (chicory root fiber).
Optional: 1 tablespoon of acacia fiber for extra gut health benefits.
Botanical Extracts for Flavoring:
1 teaspoon of ginger root extract (for digestive health and a spicy kick).
1/2 teaspoon of licorice root extract (for sweetness and depth).
You can also add other botanicals, such as dandelion root or marshmallow root, or any others you wish to try.
Natural Sweetener:
1/4 cup of allulose or monk fruit sweetener (for a naturally sweet taste without the sugar crash).
Citric Acid: 1/4 teaspoon (for a bit of tang and to preserve your drink).
Natural Flavors:
Choose your favorite fruit juice (about 1/4 cup) or essential oil (a few drops) for flavoring. Popular options include orange, lemon, or mixed berries.
Instructions:
Preparation: If you lack carbonated water, make it with your soda maker. Carbonate 1 liter of filtered water without any extra steps. No soda maker? Not a problem. Buy carbonated water.
Mix the prebiotic fibers in a small bowl. Then, mix the inulin and optional acacia fiber with a bit of water to make a slurry. This step prevents clumping.
Infuse the Botanicals: In a saucepan, add 1 cup of water and bring it to a simmer. Add the ginger root, licorice root extract, and any other botanicals you are using.
In a large pitcher, combine carbonated water, prebiotic slurry, cooled infusions, sweeteners, citric acid, and salt. Stir well. Then, add fruit juice or a few drops of essential oil for flavor. This gives your Olipop its unique taste. Adjust: Taste your mix. Add a bit more sweetener or citric acid to adjust the sweetness or tartness if needed.
Chill: Refrigerate your Olipop for at least an hour.
Pour over ice. Garnish with a lemon slice or mint sprig. Enjoy your homemade soda, which is both refreshing and friendly to your gut.
Tips:
Experiment with flavors: Make Olipop at home and explore different botanicals and flavors. Try combinations until you find your favorite.
Storage: Enjoy homemade Olipop fresh. Or, store it in the fridge for up to a week. Shake if separation occurs.
Fiber Intake: If new to high fiber, start with a small amount of inulin. Increase at a gradual pace to avoid discomfort.
Carbonation: For fizz, add carbonated water before chilling. This keeps carbonation.
