Alicent Hightower is one of the chief characters in the novel Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin. She was a child of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, Alicent joined the high ranks within the government as the wife of King Viserys I Targaryen, making her the stepmother to his legitimate heir, Rhaenyra Targaryen. Alicent’s ambition, combined with her loyalty to her own children, placed her firmly against Rhaenyra and eventually flung her into becoming the champion for her son Aegon II’s claim to the Iron Throne upon Viserys’ death. This fight between Alicent’s “Greens”-and Rhaenyra’s, the “Blacks”-was to pave the way for a very brutal civil war. Alicent is very well described as a coming together of loyalty, cleverness, and dangerous ambition, all to protect the interests of her children.
